Memphis, Chicago and Miami emerge as top beneficiaries of 2026 NBA Draft while Pacers, Knicks and Mavericks fall short
Analysts highlighted Memphis, Chicago and Miami as the draft’s most successful teams, citing key selections and trades, whereas Indiana, New York and Dallas were identified as having missed opportunities.
The second round of the 2026 NBA Draft concluded on June 24, allowing teams to evaluate their new players and recent trades ahead of the Summer League. The draft, described by observers as deep and talent-laden, set the stage for several clubs to either solidify their rebuilding plans or face criticism for missed chances.
Memphis was praised for balancing immediate impact and future potential, selecting Cameron Boozer at No. 3 and adding Australian prospect Karim López. The Grizzlies also acquired former Detroit forward Isaiah Stewart in a salary-dump trade, a move seen as strengthening their defensive core.
Chicago’s lottery position translated into a productive haul, with the Bulls trading away both second-round picks to secure Caleb Wilson (No. 4) and Dailyn Swain (No. 15). Both players match new head coach Tiago Splitter’s preference for pace and interior aggression.
Miami, despite lacking a first-round pick, leveraged its No. 13 selection in the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade to move up to No. 41 and select guard Ryan Conwell, a senior known for three-point shooting and defensive versatility, addressing a noted roster need.
Conversely, Indiana’s draft position was compromised after its No. 5 pick was transferred to Los Angeles as part of the Ivica Zubac deal, leaving the Pacers with only a later-round selection of Purdue forward Braden Smith after trading up to No. 38.
New York opted to trade away all of its picks, preserving cap space and future second-round assets. Analysts noted that the move could be viewed as a missed opportunity to add depth to a roster that recently captured a championship.
Dallas, undergoing front-office changes with Masai Ujiri’s appointment and a new head coach, also struggled to make a notable impact in the draft, leaving questions about its future roster strategy.
