Utah Governor Issues Temporary Statewide Ban on Personal Fireworks Amid Wildfire Surge

Utah Governor Spencer Cox signed an executive order Thursday that temporarily bans the use of personal fireworks across the state during the Independence Day window of July 2-5. The order permits individual towns and cities to designate specific locations where fireworks may be set off after consulting local fire officials. The measure follows a week in which wildfires have burned more than 100,000 acres and prompted concerns about fire safety.

Cox said the decision reflects the current wildfire conditions and aims to balance public celebration with safety. He noted that while fireworks are a traditional part of Fourth of July and Pioneer Day festivities, the heightened risk requires a different approach.

The ban does not affect professional fireworks displays, which may continue in approved venues. Several municipalities, including Provo and Salt Lake City, have announced they will enforce a complete prohibition on personal fireworks. Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands director Jamie Barnes said a draft of the detailed rule is expected by the end of the week, and a similar restriction could be considered for the Pioneer Day period.

State officials warned that human-caused fires account for about three-quarters of the year's wildfires, and recent incidents, such as the Iron Fire near Eureka, are believed to be linked to fireworks. Utah Department of Public Safety Commissioner Beau Mason indicated that individuals responsible for igniting fires on public lands could be held liable for suppression costs.

Cox met with legislators before signing the order and emphasized that the decision was guided by input from firefighters rather than political considerations.
