Mangione's Lawyers and Federal Prosecutors Hold Plea Negotiations Ahead of Upcoming Hearing

Summary

Defense counsel and U.S. prosecutors discussed a possible guilty plea for Luigi Mangione before a June 29 hearing, while both sides declined to comment on the talks.

Defense attorneys for Luigi Mangione and federal prosecutors in Manhattan met to explore a potential guilty plea before a scheduled hearing next week, according to sources familiar with the discussions. The talks ended without a clear agreement, and the extent of progress remains uncertain.

Mangione, who pleaded not guilty to both state and federal charges related to the December 2024 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, faces a state trial beginning Sept. 8 and a federal trial set for the following year. He retains the right to change his plea at any point before or during trial.

A hearing before U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnet on Monday, June 29, 2026, will address trial logistics, including jury selection and proposed juror questionnaires, as outlined in a joint letter from the attorneys.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment, and Mangione's legal team did not comment on the status of the plea discussions.

"The parties write jointly to advise the Court that, at the conference currently scheduled for Monday, June 29, 2026, the parties will be prepared to address any questions the Court may have concerning the parties’ respective proposed juror questionnaires and to discuss matters related to scheduling," the attorneys said in the letter.

"Every defendant in America is presumed innocent until proven guilty," Mangione’s lead attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo said in a statement, adding that Mangione faces both state and federal charges.
