Trump to meet House Speaker Johnson on stalled housing and election legislation
President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Speaker Mike Johnson at the White House to discuss how to break a congressional deadlock involving a bipartisan housing bill and the SAVE America election-integrity act.
President Donald Trump is set to meet House Speaker Mike Johnson in the Oval Office on Thursday afternoon to discuss a way forward on two stalled pieces of legislation, a source familiar with the meeting said. The discussion follows Trump’s abrupt cancellation of the signing ceremony for a major housing bill that had passed with bipartisan support. Trump has urged Senate Republicans to first pass the SAVE America Act, a measure that would require additional voter identification and proof of citizenship, despite warnings that it lacks sufficient votes.
Speaker Johnson said the House needs the president’s backing to end the impasse, noting that Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has been withholding all legislation until the election bill moves forward. Johnson told reporters, “We’re in an era with small margins and small majorities, and we’ve got to get things moving.”
Johnson defended Trump’s decision to delay the housing bill, saying the president was making a procedural point and that the bill is expected to be signed within the constitutional ten-day window. He added that he will discuss the matter with Trump the next day.
Republican leaders have cancelled scheduled votes in the House pending progress on the SAVE America Act. Senate Republican Roger Marshall said the president’s message was clear: the election-integrity bill must be passed before other measures.
The meeting is slated for 2 p.m. Eastern time, and the White House has not responded to requests for comment.
