Trump calls UK Labour leader Andy Burnham 'extremely liberal' and unlikely to expand North Sea drilling

Résumé

President Donald Trump said he knows little about Andy Burnham, describing the British politician as extremely liberal and suggesting he would not increase oil drilling in the North Sea.

President Donald Trump said he knows little about Andy Burnham, the leading candidate to replace UK Labour leader Keir Starmer as prime minister, describing him as a "mayor of a town" who is "extremely liberal" and unlikely to open the North Sea to additional oil drilling.

Trump reiterated his earlier view that Starmer should have expanded North Sea drilling, but did not repeat his harsher criticisms of the former British prime minister. Starmer resigned after poor poll performance and local election results, and his government had previously declined a U.S. request to use British bases for strikes on Iran before later granting permission.

When asked about Burnham, Trump said, "> I don’t know anything. I see that he was, I guess, the mayor of a town. > I hear he’s extremely liberal, extremely, so that means he probably won’t open up the North Sea. You know I gave Keir Starmer some pretty good advice, I said open up the North Sea."
