Second-round picks and trade rumors dominate NBA Draft night

Résumé

The NBA’s second-round draft saw notable selections and sparked trade speculation involving LaMelo Ball and Jaylen Brown, while the Houston Rockets secured guard Bruce Thornton with the 31st pick.

The second night of the 2026 NBA Draft featured a flurry of selections and trade chatter. The Houston Rockets acquired the 31st overall pick, using it to select Ohio State guard Bruce Thornton, after a series of pick swaps involving the New York Knicks and Houston.

Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball was reported to be the subject of interest from multiple teams, including the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors, following earlier indications that he was open to a trade. The Hornets have not confirmed any deals.

Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown also entered trade discussions, with several clubs reportedly expressing interest. Celtics executive Brad Stevens declined to comment on the rumors, stating he would not predict future moves.

The Detroit Pistons traded forward Isaiah Stewart, creating additional salary-cap flexibility that could allow the team to pursue high-profile free agents.

Other second-round selections included Richie Saunders to the Memphis Grizzlies, Isaiah Evans to the Minnesota Timberwolves, and Dillon Mitchell to the Boston Celtics. The draft concluded with the selection of Malique Lewis by the Milwaukee Bucks at the 60th spot.

Trade speculation also surrounded Memphis point guard Ja Morant, with reports indicating the Grizzlies may seek to move him in exchange for draft assets and picks.
