White House Engages New Anthropic Representative Over Claude Fable 5 Restrictions

Resumen

The Trump administration has shifted its talks with Anthropic to co-founder Tom Brown, seeking assurances that the Claude Fable 5 model can be redeployed without security risks.

The White House has begun holding high-level and technical discussions with Anthropic led by co-founder Tom Brown and the company’s public policy chief Sarah Heck, after replacing co-founder Dario Amodei in recent meetings. Officials said Brown is more receptive to the administration’s concerns about the Claude Fable 5 AI model, which was taken offline on June 12 following a National Security Agency warning that its guardrails could be bypassed.

The talks aim to determine what evidence Anthropic must provide to address the government’s worries about potential "jailbreak" attacks on the model. While the administration has not yet lifted the export controls that halted the model’s deployment, it continues to explore technical safeguards that could satisfy security requirements.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers recently sent a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick requesting clarification on the criteria and timeline for restoring public access to Claude Fable 5. The letter, signed by Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jay Obernolte, C. Scott Franklin and Ted Lieu, asked for a response by June 26; the Commerce Department declined to comment on the deadline.

Both sides acknowledge that current guardrails are considered a temporary measure, as experts warn that skilled users may eventually find ways to circumvent them. A White House spokesperson and an Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
