Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s endorsements drive three Democratic primary victories in New York

Summary

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s backing helped three candidates win U.S. House primaries, reshaping power dynamics within the New York Democratic Party and prompting criticism from established leaders.

Three Democratic primary races for the U.S. House in New York were won by candidates who received endorsements from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, marking a shift in influence within the state’s Democratic establishment. Mamdani, who upset former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the 2023 mayoral primary, said the recent victories demonstrate that his earlier success was the start of a broader movement.

The wins come as House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries faces the loss of two incumbent members and growing challenges from a group of activists aligned with Mamdani. Some longtime Democratic officials expressed frustration, alleging that Mamdani’s approach prioritizes allyship on his own terms and threatens traditional party cohesion.

Among the newly elected is Avila Chevalier, a former campaign volunteer whose past social-media activity and attendance at a controversial rally after the October 7 attacks drew criticism. Chevalier defeated the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, despite initial skepticism from Mamdani’s allies.

Mamdani’s communications director Anna Bahr said the mayor’s model of politics is “not billionaire-funded or consultant-driven, but one that champions the needs of working people,” and that this resonated with voters.

The mayor’s strategy has also sparked tension with other Democratic figures. Rep. Dan Goldman, who declined to endorse Mamdani over the mayor’s stance on Israel, noted that Mamdani’s focus on certain issues has created a “toxic environment” for some communities. New York Attorney General Letitia James criticized Mamdani’s endorsed candidates for lacking understanding of the city’s diverse districts and for insufficient experience.

Despite the internal disputes, Mamdani celebrated the outcomes alongside candidates such as Brad Lander and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, who both secured decisive victories.

The primary results highlight an emerging power bloc within New York’s Democratic Party, while also underscoring growing friction between the mayor’s supporters and established party leaders.
