Europe faces record-breaking heat as high-pressure dome traps extreme temperatures

Summary

A persistent high-pressure system is driving unprecedented heat across much of Europe, with temperatures far above seasonal norms and limited air-conditioning capacity increasing health risks.

A high-pressure heat dome is keeping temperatures unusually high across western and central Europe, prompting heat warnings in the United Kingdom, France, Germany and other nations. Forecasts call for daytime highs in the mid-90s to over 100 °F (mid-30s °C) in parts of the UK, while some French locations, including Paris, could exceed 104 °F (40 °C). The UK Met Office has issued its most severe heat alerts for central and southern England and Wales.

Experts attribute the intensity of the heat wave to climate change, noting that Europe is warming at two to three times the global average. Peter Thorne, director of the ICARUS Climate Research Centre, told CNN that the heat is “supercharged by humans, by our emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases,” and warned that homes in many European countries lack air-conditioning, leaving vulnerable populations exposed.

Thorne advised residents to keep sunlight out of homes, close shutters, avoid opening windows during peak heat and seek cooler indoor spaces. He emphasized that many European buildings were designed to retain heat, a legacy of historically milder summers.

The heat dome, a stagnant high-pressure system, suppresses cloud formation and traps warmth, creating conditions that are 10 °C to 15 °C above normal in some areas. The phenomenon is expected to shift eastward over the weekend, bringing the greatest temperatures to Germany on Saturday before easing slightly in the UK and France on Sunday. Elevated humidity and limited nighttime cooling are also expected to exacerbate health risks.

Air-conditioning remains rare in Europe, with roughly 20 % of homes equipped compared with about 90 % in the United States. High installation costs, energy prices and building regulations have limited adoption, while policymakers caution that widespread AC use could hinder climate-neutrality goals.

Health officials have highlighted the dangers of heat-related dehydration, cardiovascular strain, impaired cognition and heatstroke, urging the public to stay hydrated and limit exposure during peak heat periods.
