Washington Wizards pick BYU forward AJ Dybantsa with No. 1 overall in NBA Draft
The Wizards selected AJ Dybantsa as the first overall pick, adding a versatile 6-9 forward to a roster that includes Anthony Davis and Trae Young.
The Washington Wizards chose BYU forward AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall selection in the NBA Draft, ending weeks of speculation about the top prospect. Dybantsa, a 6-9 forward with a 7-foot wingspan, was projected alongside Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Duke forward Cameron Boozer and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson as one of the leading candidates, with the team reportedly narrowing its choice between Dybantsa and Peterson.
Washington hopes the athletic, two-way forward can complement a core that features Anthony Davis, Trae Young, third-year center Alex Sarr and second-year guard Tre Johnson, both of whom were lottery picks in recent drafts. Dybantsa, who entered BYU as the nation’s top recruit, posted 25.5 points per game as a freshman, shooting 51% from the field and averaging 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists. While not an elite three-point shooter, he demonstrated the ability to stretch the floor and create shots from various spots.
"It means a lot," Dybantsa said to ESPN after the selection, adding that the pick is a "stepping stone" reflecting his hard work and discipline.
Commissioner Adam Silver announced Dybantsa by his formal first name, Anicet, at the player's request to honor his father, Anicet Dybantsa Sr. The forward expressed that his achievements are dedicated to his father.
Scouts note Dybantsa’s defensive potential, citing his size, mobility and motor as foundations for developing into a multi-position defender. Analysts project that, with continued development, he could become a multi-tool offensive weapon from day one and potentially evolve into an All-NBA caliber player.
