Bucks trade Giannis Antetokounmpo to Heat in exchange for Herro, picks and prospects
Milwaukee sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to Miami for Tyler Herro, several draft picks and young players, after weighing offers that included a potential deal with Boston.
Milwaukee confirmed on Monday that it has completed a trade sending Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. In return, the Bucks received guard Tyler Herro, forward Kel’el Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., guard Kasparas Jakučionis, three first-round selections (including the No. 13 pick of the upcoming draft) and additional future first- and second-round picks.
The deal concluded a months-long evaluation of possible destinations for Antetokounmpo, who declined to sign a contract extension that would have kept him in Milwaukee beyond the 2024-25 season. Sources said the Heat’s package was chosen over a Boston Celtics proposal that centered on acquiring forward Jaylen Brown, because Miami offered a larger quantity of assets and longer-term flexibility.
The Celtics’ offer, which would have paired Brown—a five-time All-Star with three years and $183 million remaining on his contract—with the Bucks, raised concerns that the team might have to trade him under duress if he were unwilling to relocate. Miami, meanwhile, adjusted its proposal after the Celtics entered the discussion, ultimately including Jakučionis, a 20-year-old guard with three guaranteed years remaining, rather than point guard Davion Mitchell, whose contract was set to expire after the season.
While Herro’s future with Milwaukee remains uncertain, the organization is reportedly considering offers from other teams, including the Detroit Pistons. The trade is not expected to be finalized until July 6, leaving a window for additional adjustments.
Antetokounmpo’s move to Miami aligns with his expressed respect for the Heat’s competitive culture, though analysts note that the roster changes could affect the team’s championship prospects. The Bucks now face decisions regarding other key players, such as forward Andrew Wiggins, who holds a $30.1 million player option for next season, and forward Norm Powell, an unrestricted free agent.
