Giannis Antetokounmpo traded to Miami in blockbuster deal

Summary

The Milwaukee Bucks sent Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, multiple draft picks and a pick swap.

The Milwaukee Bucks completed a trade on Monday night that sends two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and forward Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat. In return, Miami delivered guard Tyler Herro, forward Kel'el Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., forward Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round selections—including the No. 13 pick this year—one pick swap, and a second-round pick, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

"The Heat have vaulted themselves out of the play-in pack with their biggest star acquisition since LeBron's famous decision in 2010," wrote ESPN analyst Zach Kram.

Miami, which has not reached the NBA Finals since 2023 and has spent the past four seasons in the play-in tournament, hopes Antetokounmpo’s elite scoring and interior presence will lift the franchise back into title contention. The Heat have struggled offensively in recent years, ranking in the bottom half of the league in offensive rating for most of the past decade. Antetokounmpo, who averaged more than 34 points and 12 rebounds per 36 minutes last season, could address that shortfall and improve the team’s rim-scoring, an area where Miami has ranked among the league’s worst.

For Milwaukee, the trade marks the end of Antetokounmpo’s 13-year tenure, during which he became the franchise’s all-time leader in games, minutes, points, rebounds, assists and blocks. The Bucks receive a collection of future assets, including a late-lottery pick in the current draft, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a pick swap in 2030 and a second-rounder in 2033, as well as the young players Ware and Jakucionis, who have shown promise but have yet to break out at the NBA level. Herro and Jaquez could also be flipped for additional value, according to analysts.

The trade is being evaluated as a B-grade acquisition for Miami and a B+ grade for Milwaukee, reflecting the Heat’s immediate boost versus the Bucks’ longer-term rebuilding outlook. Both teams now face decisions about roster construction and future moves as they aim to achieve their respective goals.
