Timberwolves trade Julius Randle to Nets, receive 2025 first-round pick and 2025 second-round pick

Résumé

Minnesota sends forward Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets, shedding his contract and acquiring a late first-round and a second-round draft pick as part of the deal.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded forward Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets, adding the 28th overall pick in the 2025 draft to the transaction. In return, Minnesota receives the Nets' 2025 second-round pick (33rd overall) and clears Randle's $20 million salary from its books.

Tim Connelly, the Timberwolves' president of basketball operations, confirmed the move as part of a broader strategy to create salary-cap flexibility ahead of free agency. The team is expected to focus on retaining guard Ayo Dosunmu, whom Connelly identified as a top priority for the upcoming summer, and on integrating forward Naz Reid into a larger role alongside Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels.

Randle, a two-time All-Star who contributed to Minnesota's 2025 playoff victories over the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors, had been the subject of trade speculation since February. His contract includes a player option for the 2027-28 season.

The trade gives Minnesota an additional first-round selection and a second-round pick, which could be used in future drafts or as assets in subsequent transactions.
