Second Kidnapper Note Claims 84-Year-Old Nancy Guthrie Died After Abduction

Summary

Investigators say a follow-up ransom note sent on Feb. 6 alleges the missing mother of NBC anchor Savannah Guthrie has died, while law enforcement continues to pursue the case.

U.S. investigators say a second note received by the family of Nancy Guthrie, 84, claims she died after being abducted from her home near Tucson, Arizona. The note, sent on Feb. 6, follows an earlier demand for millions of dollars in bitcoin that was delivered the day after her disappearance on Jan. 31. Unlike the first communication, the later note contains no ransom demand but apologizes for her death and says it was unintended.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office, which is working with the FBI, declined to comment on the contents of the notes but said the investigation remains active. A department spokesperson said, "The Pima County Sheriff's Department continues to work closely with the FBI as investigators follow up on leads, review information, and pursue the facts surrounding this case."

Nancy Guthrie was dropped off at her residence by relatives on Jan. 31 and failed to attend a virtual Sunday church service the next morning, prompting a missing-person alert. Security footage later released by authorities showed a masked individual near her home. Law-enforcement agencies have offered a combined reward of $1.1 million for information leading to her recovery.

Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s "Today" show, confirmed the family received the messages and said they continue to hope for a resolution, acknowledging the possibility that their mother may not be found.
