Montreal police officer killed in shootout, suspect dead, shelter-in-place lifted

Summary

A police officer was fatally shot during a gunfight in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges district, and the suspect was killed at the scene, ending a three-hour shelter-in-place order.

A police officer died and a civilian was injured after a gunfight erupted in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood on Monday. Police said the suspect was killed at the scene, prompting officials to lift the emergency shelter-in-place directive.

Chief of Police Fady Dagher told reporters that officers responded to reports of a firearm aimed from a hotel window, were fired upon, and returned fire. He added that the incident marked the first police fatality in the city in 24 years.

The province of Quebec issued an emergency alert shortly after 12:30 p.m., warning residents of an armed and dangerous suspect and advising them to stay indoors, lock doors and avoid windows.

"The immediate threat to the public is no longer present," Dagher said, adding that shelter-in-place was no longer required.

"Today, one of ours has fallen in the line of duty," he said at a news conference.

Montreal mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed condolences to the officer's family, friends and colleagues in a social-media post.
