Police officer killed and several injured in Montreal shooting near Jewish institutions
A gunman opened fire in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood, killing a police officer and wounding two other officers and a civilian, while authorities placed the area on lockdown.
A shooting in Montreal's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood left one police officer dead and injured two other officers and a civilian, according to the city's police service (SPVM). The attack, which began around 11:30 a.m. local time, targeted an area with numerous Jewish businesses, schools and community centres. SPVM issued an imminent threat alert and urged residents to stay indoors and lock doors.
"We are asking everyone to avoid the sector. The situation is not under control," said Jean-Pierre Brabant, a spokesperson for Montreal police.
Police confirmed that one suspect was neutralised, while reports of hostages remain unverified. Video from the scene showed two bodies on the floor and a gunman in camouflage with a rifle, believed to be an SKS, lying nearby. The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs said it was monitoring the incident and expressed condolences to the families of those affected.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue to secure the neighbourhood and assess the motive behind the attack.
