Montreal police end manhunt after downtown shootout kills officer
A gunfight in the Côte-des-Neiges area resulted in one police officer's death, another officer and a civilian wounded, and the suspect was later located, ending the emergency alert.
Montreal police said the immediate threat to the public has ended and shelter-in-place orders were lifted after a shootout in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood. The exchange of fire occurred near a high-rise building that houses a grocery store and a restaurant, after officers responded to reports of a gun pointed out of a hotel window.
Police chief Fady Dagher told reporters that officers were shot at upon arrival, leading to a gunfight in which one officer was killed, another officer and a civilian were injured, and the armed suspect was subsequently apprehended. He noted that it had been 24 years since a Montreal police officer was killed in the line of duty.
The provincial government issued an emergency alert at about 12:30 p.m., warning residents of an armed and dangerous suspect and advising them to stay away from windows and lock doors. Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada expressed condolences to the fallen officer’s family, friends and colleagues.
