Cape Verde draws 2-2 with Uruguay to extend World Cup campaign
Cape Verde equalised in the second half and held Uruguay to a 2-2 draw, marking the island nation's second point in the group stage.
Cape Verde secured a 2-2 draw against Uruguay on Sunday, earning its second point in the group stage after a goalless draw with Spain. The Blue Sharks opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Kevin Pina converted a free kick, delivering the country's first ever World Cup goal.
Uruguay responded with two goals in a seven-minute period before halftime, the first from a rebound header by Maximillian Araújo and the second from an assist by Agustín Canobbio. In the second half, substitute Hélio Varela capitalised on a defensive error by Mathías Olivera, intercepting a pass and beating goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to restore parity.
Uruguay dominated possession and created 17 shots, but Cape Verde's defence held firm for the remainder of the match, preserving the draw. The result keeps Cape Verde in contention for advancement from Group H.
"We are proud of the performance and will keep fighting," said a Cape Verde team spokesperson after the match.
