The match featured a disallowed Iranian goal after a video review ruled forward Mehdi Taremi offside. The goal had come from a set piece in the 25th minute, with captain Ehsan Hajsafi delivering the free kick and Taremi scoring before the decision was overturned.
Belgium dominated possession and shot statistics in the first half, completing more passes and controlling the ball for the majority of the period, yet failed to convert any chances against goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. In the second half, Iran created another scoring opportunity from a set piece, but Courtois saved Taremi's volley.
The game turned in the 62nd minute when Belgium midfielder Nathan Ngoy received a red card after pulling Taremi by the shirt during a breakaway. Belgium finished the match with ten men.
Both teams remain under pressure: Iran must beat Egypt to advance, while Belgium needs a win over New Zealand to avoid elimination after failing to score in its first two group matches.
