Wyndham Clark Leads US Open by Six Shots Ahead of Final Round

Summary

Wyndham Clark holds a six-stroke lead at the US Open after a strong third round, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler remains in contention for a career Grand Slam.

Wyndham Clark entered Sunday’s final round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills with a six-shot advantage after posting a 70-par round that included four crucial pars and an eagle on the 16th hole. The 27-year-old’s 3-wood shot landed four feet from the pin, producing the tournament’s only eagle on that hole and extending his lead over second-place Scottie Scheffler and the rest of the field.

Clark said the late-day finish was “unfortunate” because fewer spectators were present, but he remained optimistic about his position. He also noted that his 54-hole total of 203 was the lowest ever recorded at Shinnecock Hills.

Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player, shot a 68 on the third day, including three consecutive birdies on the back nine, keeping his hopes of completing a career Grand Slam alive. He acknowledged the significance of the moment, stating, “We want to be in these positions. This is why we practice and play, to have the opportunity to win golf tournaments, and that’s what tomorrow is.”

Other contenders fell back: Sam Stevens finished two shots behind Clark after a mixed back-nine, Tom Kim and Sahith Theegala each posted rounds of 72, and Rory McIlroy slipped to 73, leaving him ten strokes off the lead. Only five players remained under par after three rounds.

If Clark can post a solid round on Sunday—par or a few strokes over—analysts expect him to secure the championship, while Scheffler will need a strong performance to close the gap and chase the final leg of his Grand Slam.
