Apple to close three U.S. retail stores on June 20

Résumé

Apple announced the permanent closure of its Towson Town Center, North County, and Trumbull stores on June 20, citing reduced mall traffic and retailer departures.

Apple will shut down three of its United States retail locations on June 20. The Towson Town Center store in Maryland will close at 8 p.m., while the North County store in Escondido, California, and the Trumbull store in Connecticut will close at 9 p.m. each.

In an April statement, Apple said the closures result from the departure of several retailers and declining conditions at the malls where the stores operate. The company added that it continuously evaluates its locations to align with customer needs as it expands its global retail footprint.

Apple noted that employees at the Trumbull and Escondido stores can transfer to nearby Apple stores, while Towson Town Center staff may apply for other Apple roles under the collective bargaining agreement. The Towson location was the first U.S. Apple Store to unionize in 2022, and its closure has drawn criticism from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers and from several lawmakers.

"This is about whether workers are treated fairly under the law or punished for exercising their rights. Apple is denying union-represented workers the same opportunities it is giving to others — and doing so because these workers chose to organize," said IAM International President Brian Bryant.

Apple said the union agreement requires it to offer transfers within a 50-mile radius if a new store opens in that area; no such plans have been announced.
