U.S. Men’s Team Secures Round of 32 Spot, Opponent Still Undetermined

Summary

The United States qualified for the World Cup knockout stage after a 2-0 win over Australia, but will face a third-place finisher from Groups B, E, F, I or J on July 1 at Levi's Stadium.

The United States men’s national team earned a place in the World Cup round of 32 after defeating Australia 2-0 in Seattle on June 19, adding to its earlier 4-1 victory over Paraguay. With six points, the U.S. topped Group D and is guaranteed to advance regardless of the outcome of its final group match against Turkey.

As Group D winners, the United States will meet the third-place team from one of five groups—B, E, F, I or J—once those groups finish their matches. Potential opponents include Canada, Switzerland, Bosnia and Qatar from Group B; Germany, Ivory Coast, Ecuador and Curacao from Group E; Sweden, Japan, Netherlands and Tunisia from Group F; Norway, France, Senegal and Iraq from Group I; and Argentina, Algeria, Jordan and Austria from Group J.

The knockout-stage match is scheduled for July 1 at Levi’s Stadium, with the exact opponent to be decided after the other groups complete their games.
