U.S. Men’s Soccer Secures Group D Top Spot Ahead of Australia Match

The United States clinched first place in Group D after a 2-0 victory over Australia at Seattle’s Lumen Field, guaranteeing a place in the World Cup round of 32. Coach Mauricio Pochettino rested star forward Christian Pulisic, opting for a lineup that included Ricardo Pepi as a second striker, while midfielder Tyler Adams praised the squad’s depth.

Captain Tim Ream said the current group felt different because of the players’ personalities and how they meshed together, adding that the team’s enjoyment translated into strong performances on the field. The Americans opened the scoring when Malik Tillman won a free-kick that Antonee Robinson delivered to Sergiño Dest, whose deflected shot was headed in by Alex Freeman.

Defensively, the United States recorded a shutout for the first time since September and allowed only one goal in two matches, though late-stage pressure from Australia highlighted areas for improvement. Pochettino described the fan atmosphere in Seattle as “amazing” and noted the emotional connection between supporters and the team.

Adams cautioned against complacency, urging teammates to enjoy the moment but remain focused on upcoming challenges, including the upcoming round-of-32 match at SoFi Stadium against Turkey.
