LAPD releases body-camera footage of officer-involved shooting that killed a dog in Canoga Park

Summary

The Los Angeles Police Department posted body-camera video showing an officer firing multiple shots at a dog during a welfare check, prompting calls for an investigation.

The Los Angeles Police Department released body-camera footage of a Saturday evening incident in which an officer fired several rounds at a golden-retriever-poodle mix during a welfare check at an apartment on Jordan Avenue in Canoga Park. The video shows officers shouting for the owner to restrain the animal, the dog barking, and the officer discharging his weapon. Police said the dog rushed toward officers and attacked, leading to the use of deadly force.

The owner, identified as Marie Marseille, was inside the apartment and answered the door. She told officers the animal was her pet and not dangerous. The footage shows the officer’s firearm drawn before the dog emerged and throughout the encounter. After the first shot, the video pauses, and additional shots are heard.

Activists and animal-rights groups gathered outside LAPD headquarters after the video’s release. The family of the deceased dog issued a statement through attorney Brett Greenfield, describing the incident as a “welfare check” in which no violence was reported by the 911 caller.

A neighbor who called 911 said they heard screaming and barking before the police arrived and later expressed remorse for initiating the call. The neighbor described officers knocking on the door and commanding, “Put your dog away,” before the shooting.

LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell announced a comprehensive review of the shooting. A GoFundMe campaign created in the dog’s name has raised nearly $200,000 to support the family.
