Celtics’ pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo hinges on Jaylen Brown swap

Summary

Boston is reportedly interested in acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo only if the deal includes a one-for-one trade for Jaylen Brown, with additional assets also under discussion.

Boston is said to be on the short list of teams interested in Giannis Antetokounmpo, but sources indicate that any viable trade would have to involve the Celtics’ forward Jaylen Brown. The Athletic’s Sam Amick reported that the Celtics prefer a straight player-for-player exchange, noting that Brown would be essential for Milwaukee to consider the deal.

"The Celtics have gone to great lengths to avoid the elephant in the room here, but Jaylen Brown would need to be part of any deal for Antetokounmpo," Amick wrote. "If Boston had its way, the conversation would start and end there with a one-for-one swap of fellow All-Stars who are still in their respective primes."

Brown, who finished sixth in MVP voting after a strong season, is viewed as a key asset, though analysts question whether he is seen as a franchise-defining scorer. The Bucks’ strategy remains uncertain; they could either build around Brown or trade him for younger players and draft picks, according to Amick.

Potential compensation from Boston could include up to three future first-round picks, and Antetokounmpo’s willingness to sign an extension with the Celtics may influence the negotiations. The Celtics, favored to win the Eastern Conference next season, are not considered as desperate for star talent as some other teams, but the rarity of acquiring a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber means the franchise is weighing how much it is prepared to invest.
