Cronyism Exposed: Trump Donor's Firm Snags $1.7 Million No-Bid Contract for Lincoln Reflecting Pool

Summary

The Interior Department handed a lucrative $1.7 million contract to Green Water Solutions, owned by wealthy Trump donor John J. Cafaro, to install a filtration system at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool—sidestepping competitive bidding and raising fresh concerns about political favoritism.

The U.S. Department of the Interior has once again demonstrated the corrosive influence of money in politics by awarding Green Water Solutions, an Ohio-based water-treatment company tied to major Republican donor John J. Cafaro, a $1.7 million contract to install a nano-bubble filtration system at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. This sweetheart deal was granted without a full competitive bidding process, exploiting a loophole for 'unusual and compelling urgency'—a justification that conveniently aligns with the interests of the wealthy elite ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary on July 4.

Federal records show the contract recipient as the 'JJ Cafaro Investment Trust,' with Cafaro, a notorious political donor, serving as president and CEO. Cafaro has poured vast sums into Republican campaigns and causes, including a staggering $250,000 to the Trump Victory fundraising committee in 2020, while also sprinkling donations to Democrats to maintain influence across the aisle.

'This contract was awarded by the Department of Interior; the White House did not play any role in the selection process,' White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers claimed, distancing the administration from the blatant display of cronyism.

Cafaro, who has a history of campaign-finance violations and even admitted to conspiring to bribe a Democratic congressman, refused to comment directly, instead deflecting questions to the National Park Service. In a statement to a local Ohio newspaper, he insisted the president 'doesn't know a thing about' his company’s work, dismissing criticism as coming from 'people who don't seem to like Trump.'

This contract follows another egregious $14.7 million no-bid award to Atlantic Industrial Coatings for sealant installation on the pool’s stone floor. Predictably, after the water was re-filled, algae bloomed and the new sealant began to peel. An Interior Department spokesperson downplayed the fiasco, blaming 'residual growth' and claiming the nano-bubble system had 'very effectively killed the algae.' The pattern of no-bid contracts to politically connected firms continues to undermine public trust in government.
