The shooting death of a 1-year-old boy by police in Senatobia, Mississippi, during a response to a shoplifting call has sparked protests and renewed calls for police accountability in the predominantly Black community.
The fatal shooting of 1-year-old Kohen Wiley by police in Senatobia, Mississippi, has triggered significant unrest among local residents, particularly within the Black community. The incident occurred while officers were responding to a shoplifting report at a Walmart, where they encountered two women and a child leaving the store. According to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, officers attempted to stop the vehicle driven by one of the women, which allegedly moved towards them, prompting an officer to discharge their weapon.
Kohen's mother, Vellesiya Wiley, claims that her friend was not driving towards the officers and disputes the shoplifting allegations, asserting that the diapers were paid for. In a video shared by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, Wiley recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating she raised her son to show the officers he was in the car just before shots were fired.
Policing expert Ian Adams criticized the officer's decision to fire into a moving vehicle, emphasizing the inherent risks involved. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues, with authorities promising to release video footage once available.
