One Dead, Another Injured in Wilmington Hospital Shooting

Résumé

A 23-year-old suspect was arrested in Philadelphia after a shooting at Wilmington Hospital left one person dead and another wounded, prompting a temporary lockdown that has now been lifted.

A shooting at Wilmington Hospital in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, resulted in one fatality and a second person being injured, authorities said. The incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday and triggered a citywide police response and a temporary lockdown of the medical facility, which has since been lifted.

Police identified a 23-year-old man as a suspect; he was taken into custody in Philadelphia and faces pending charges and extradition to Delaware. Officials described the event as a "targeted, isolated incident" but did not provide a motive.

Mayor John Carney called the day "terrible" for the city and emphasized the hospital’s role as a sanctuary from violence. He praised the emergency responders from city, county and state agencies for their actions, describing their work as "incredible" and a testament to their training.

Senator Chris Coons said he was monitoring the situation and expressed prayers for the safety of patients, health-care workers, first responders and law-enforcement officers.

Hospital officials have not yet commented on the shooting.
