Ukrainian drones strike Moscow oil refinery as G7 summit convenes
President Zelensky said Ukrainian drones hit the Moscow Oil Refinery during the G7 leaders' meeting, while Russia intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities the previous day.
Ukrainian forces launched drone attacks on an oil refinery in Moscow, located about 10 miles from the Kremlin, as the Group of Seven leaders gathered for a summit that includes discussion of Russia's war in Ukraine. Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that dozens of drones entered the city and that at least one struck the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district, which supplies more than a third of the capital's fuel and jet-fuel needs. He said no casualties were reported, but did not detail the damage.
In a video statement, President Volodymyr Zelensky described the strike as a response to recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory. He added that Ukraine is increasing pressure on the Kremlin by targeting oil and gas infrastructure inside Russia.
The day before the drone strike, Russian missiles and drones hit Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, killing at least 11 people and injuring dozens. The attacks also damaged cultural sites, including the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a major Eastern Orthodox cathedral.
Zelensky, who has called for direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, told reporters that he raised the need for additional air-defence missiles with U.S. President Donald Trump during the summit, noting ongoing cooperation between the two countries on the issue.
The United Nations reported that May saw the highest number of civilian deaths in Ukraine since early 2022, with at least 274 fatalities and nearly 1,800 injuries.
