Apple iPhone 18 Pro expected to receive major camera hardware upgrades
Upcoming iPhone 18 Pro models are rumored to add a variable aperture main sensor, a wider-aperture telephoto lens and new professional-oriented software features.
Apple’s next flagship, the iPhone 18 Pro, is slated for release in the coming months and is expected to include several camera enhancements, according to industry reports. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman said the device could represent "the biggest leap in camera hardware" in recent years.
The most prominent hardware change is a variable aperture on the main camera, a feature that has been discussed for years but has not yet been detailed. Analysts suggest it could allow users to adjust focus and depth of field, improve portrait mode performance and enhance low-light capabilities.
The telephoto lens is also rumored to receive a larger aperture, which should boost its performance in dim environments, addressing a known weakness of the current model.
In addition to hardware, the iPhone 18 Pro may see software upgrades aimed at professional users. Aaron Tilley, previously reporting for The Information, indicated that the built-in camera app could gain more advanced controls, moving beyond its current basic functionality. A revamped Camera Control button and possible Pro-exclusive features are also anticipated.
These rumored changes suggest Apple is seeking to narrow the gap between its smartphone cameras and professional-grade equipment.
