Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson named NBA Finals MVP after contract sacrifice
Jalen Brunson was awarded Finals MVP as the New York Knicks captured their first championship in 53 years, a success linked to his decision to sign a reduced contract two years earlier.
New York Knicks point guard Jalen Brunson earned NBA Finals MVP honors after the team secured its first championship since 1973. Brunson, 29, signed a contract extension in 2024 that was significantly lower than market value, a move the organization says helped create roster flexibility.
"He understands what winning is about," Knicks head coach Mike Brown said after the game. "He took a pay cut that I wouldn’t take. Every time they would throw that number in front of me, I would say no, and I feel like I’m a great guy. He set the bar. That set the standard."
Brunson explained his decision in a February interview, noting that he preferred to focus on playing without the pressure of a large contract and wanted to ensure his family’s security. He said the choice was personal and aimed at maintaining a "free mind" on the court.
The 45-point performance in Game 5, including 14 of 27 field goals and 13 of 15 free throws, was a key factor in the Knicks’ victory. Analysts project that Brunson could be eligible for a new five-year deal in 2028 worth up to $417.8 million, pending negotiations.
Brunson’s career includes high school accolades, two NCAA titles with Villanova, and a 2018 draft selection by the Dallas Mavericks before joining the Knicks in free agency.
