Massachusetts Judge Orders Restoration of National Park Signs Removed Under Trump Administration

A federal judge in Massachusetts issued a ruling requiring the restoration of all signs that were altered or removed from national parks under a directive issued by the Trump administration in 2025. The order, written by Judge Angel Kelley, mandates that the changes be reversed by July 3, ahead of the United States' 250th anniversary, and blocks any additional modifications to park exhibits.

The lawsuit, filed in February by a coalition of conservation groups and advocacy organizations, alleged that the administration pursued a campaign to erase or downplay aspects of American history and scientific information. The court noted that at least 45 signs covering topics such as climate change and Native American history had been changed, citing examples like the removal of a Grand Teton marker referencing a 19th-century massacre and a Fort Sumter sign detailing climate-related threats.

An Interior Department spokesperson described the judge as “a liberal activist judge” and indicated that the department would consider appealing the decision. The statement also referenced upcoming celebrations of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Alan Spears, senior director for cultural resources at the National Parks Conservation Association, welcomed the ruling, saying it stops the “sanitization, censorship and softening of history” in the parks and allows visitors to receive a fuller interpretation of American history.

Judge Kelley emphasized the educational role of national parks, calling them “America’s largest classroom” and asserting that the government has a responsibility to present history in its entirety rather than in selective fragments.
