U.S. Men’s National Team defeats Paraguay 4-1 in World Cup opener
The United States opened Group D with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in Los Angeles, with Folarin Balogun scoring twice in his World Cup debut.
The United States Men’s National Team began its World Cup campaign with a 4-1 win over Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Friday. Folarin Balogun opened the scoring in the third minute after a pass from Weston McKennie, and added a second goal before halftime. Christian Pulisic, who was substituted at the break, contributed a cross that set up Balogun’s second strike and was praised for his early impact.
Paraguay’s only reply came in the second half, narrowing the deficit to 3-1 before Balogun completed his brace with a left-foot finish from a Malik Tillman assist. The United States held on to secure three points and improve its goal difference in Group D.
Balogun described the victory as “a real dream” and expressed pride in representing the United States. Pulisic said the atmosphere, with fans chanting and displaying national colors, helped motivate the team. McKennie added that hearing the national anthem and the crowd’s energy made the moment special for the players.
The win also raised concerns about discipline, as Tyler Adams received a yellow card that could affect his availability for future matches. The United States will look to build on the performance as the tournament progresses.
