Alex Freeman scores decisive World Cup goal as US beats Australia in Seattle
The United States advanced to the World Cup round of 32 after a 2-0 win over Australia in Seattle, highlighted by defender Alex Freeman's first tournament goal.
The United States secured a 2-0 victory over Australia on Friday at Seattle's Lumen Field, clinching a place in the World Cup round of 32. Defender Alex Freeman, who started the match for the first time under manager Mauricio Pochettino, scored the winning goal in the second half after a VAR review confirmed the tally.
Freeman, 21, became the son of former Super Bowl XXXI champion Antonio Freeman to score on the same Seattle site where his father once excelled in a 1996 NFL game. The younger Freeman said the moment was “a full-circle, family moment” and credited his father’s competitiveness for helping him prepare for high-pressure situations.
The match featured a brief concussion assessment for Freeman after a head-to-head clash in the 38th minute, but he was cleared to continue. After the goal, teammates celebrated before the referee’s decision was upheld.
US striker Folarin Balogun praised Freeman, calling him “a humble kid” and noting the significance of scoring on home soil. The crowd of 66,925 fans provided a vocal backdrop, including a rendition of the national anthem and a fly-over by military helicopters.
The win marks the United States' seventh unbeaten game at Lumen Field, reinforcing the venue’s reputation as a stronghold for the national team.
