Mexican group says anonymous tip leads to search of unmarked graves, finds no trace of missing Savannah Guthrie's mother

Summary

A Mexican missing-persons organization received an anonymous tip that the remains of Nancy Guthrie were buried near a stream, but after locating 25 unmarked graves, investigators said they have not found her.

A Mexican nonprofit that assists families of missing persons said it received an anonymous call on June 10 indicating that the remains of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, were buried in an unmarked grave near a stream in the Mariposa area close to the border. The group’s leader, Ramona Guadalupe Ayala Ortiz, told a local newspaper that search teams began examining the stream that had not been investigated previously.

Searchers uncovered 25 unmarked graves in the vicinity but reported no evidence linking any of the sites to Guthrie. The organization said it will continue to investigate the area for her and other missing individuals.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement on June 11 noting that Mexican authorities had not contacted the department regarding the tip. Sheriff Chris Nanos said the investigation remains active and that officials will follow up on any credible information.

Guthrie has been missing since early 2026 after a reported kidnapping from her Arizona home. Police have not publicly identified a suspect or motive, though the sheriff previously said investigators are making progress and expect an arrest when sufficient evidence is gathered.
