Anthropic CEO warns AI could cause lasting job losses, urges policy response

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei said AI systems could create a "decent possibility" of long-term job loss, arguing that widespread displacement might be an inherent feature of technology that replicates human cognition. In a policy essay, he warned that even with mitigation efforts, AI could cause "significant enduring job loss" and suggested governments prepare for such outcomes.

Amodei called for expanded measurement and tracking of AI's impact on the labor market, including enhanced government statistics. He advocated "pro-employment incentives" such as wage insurance for workers forced into lower-paying roles, tax incentives for retention, workforce-training grants and improved job-matching infrastructure.

If AI reduces demand for human labor permanently, Amodei said governments may need to consider "long-term income support" like universal basic income, funded by taxes on relevant companies or higher capital-gains taxes, and he also mentioned universal capital accounts as a way to distribute AI-generated wealth.

He noted that Anthropic aims to help corporate customers increase revenue and "do more with their existing workforce" rather than focusing solely on cost cuts, but emphasized that society must plan for workers who may not automatically share in AI's gains.

"We need better measurement and tracking of AI's labor-market effects, and policies that both slow the damage and share the gains," Amodei wrote.

The essay reflects a broader shift among AI leaders toward highlighting productivity gains and economic opportunities while still acknowledging potential employment challenges.
