Ukraine Conflict Surpasses World War I in Length

Summary

The war in Ukraine has reached 1,569 days, exceeding the duration of World War I, with no imminent end in sight.

The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine has now lasted 1,569 days, more than four years and three months, overtaking World War I as the longest war in modern history. The fighting began when Russian forces entered Ukraine in February 2022, a move that Russian President Vladimir Putin expected would bring a swift victory. Instead, Ukrainian resistance forced a shift to a prolonged war of attrition.

A Ukrainian soldier, identified only by his call sign "France" due to security concerns, said he had initially expected the war to last two or three years before political leaders could reach a settlement. Current public opinion polls indicate that roughly half of Ukrainians think the conflict will continue beyond the next year, raising the prospect of it approaching the six-year span of World War II. Some observers also note that the war's origins could be traced back to 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea.

"I thought maybe two or three years, and then politicians will find some kind of consensus," the soldier said.

Peace negotiations remain stalled, and analysts see no clear path to a rapid resolution.
