Trump's Planned White House UFC Event Costs Over $60 Million, Involves Multiple Federal Agencies

Summary

A legal filing reveals that the proposed UFC fight on the White House South Lawn will cost more than $60 million and require resources from at least seven federal agencies, while a lawsuit challenges its legality.

A legal filing shows that the proposed mixed-martial-arts event on the White House South Lawn will cost well over $60 million and involve hundreds of staff from more than seven federal agencies, including Homeland Security and the Federal Aviation Administration. The event, slated for the weekend as part of the nation’s 250th-anniversary celebrations, would feature seven bouts and accommodate roughly 4,000 spectators on the lawn, with an additional 120,000 expected to watch from the nearby Ellipse.

Installation of the arena began on May 20, with the Secret Service coordinating the screening of 20 to 30 trucks of equipment and 700 to 900 workers each day. The schedule includes a ceremonial weigh-in on Saturday, a concert by The Zac Brown Band, and a weekend-long fan festival offering interactive experiences and athlete appearances. The fights are set for Sunday night, after which President Trump is due to travel to France for the G7 summit. Dismantling is planned to start the following day and be completed by June 23.

"Well over $60 million and tens of thousands of hours of labor have been expended," the filing states, noting that the costs are being covered by the UFC and affiliated groups.

A federal lawsuit filed by two Virginia residents, represented by the Public Integrity Project, argues that the event violates National Park Service rules that prohibit sporting events on federal parklands. One attorney described the plan as a “corrupt use of our most sacred national monuments for private gain.” The National Park Service responded that the event could be halted at any time by a court order.

"All these hopes could be dashed at the very last moment," the agency’s filing warned, referring to the potential impact of the lawsuit.
