NASA Administrator Defends All-Male Artemis III Crew Selection

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the four astronauts selected for the Artemis III mission were chosen solely on the basis of their experience, expertise and flight-ready status. He noted that his own spaceflights have included 50 percent female crews and that nearly half of NASA’s senior leadership positions are held by women. Isaacman added that the most recent astronaut candidate class under the current administration was majority female because they were the strongest applicants.

The Artemis III crew, announced at Johnson Space Center, will consist of commander Randy Bresnik, European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano as pilot, and mission specialists Andre Douglas and Frank Rubio. The flight will test rendezvous and docking procedures in low-Earth orbit using lunar landers built by commercial partners.

"The selection of an all-male crew for Artemis III was certainly not intentional," Bresnik told CNN, emphasizing the diversity within NASA’s astronaut office and stating that crew assignments are driven by required skill sets.

NASA currently has about 35 active astronauts, including 15 women, with additional candidates in training. The agency indicated that two women are being prepared for future Artemis missions and that later flights will feature a broader gender mix.

Isaacman said the astronaut office assigns crews to give each mission the best chance of meeting its objectives, taking into account factors such as test-pilot experience, program development work and individual availability. He urged critics to consider the pipeline of astronauts undergoing lunar-specific training for upcoming surface missions.
