U.S. Military Conducts Additional Airstrikes Against Iran Following Recent Escalation
U.S. Central Command said the latest strikes were self-defense measures responding to what it described as Iran's continued aggression, after a series of retaliatory attacks between the two sides.
U.S. Central Command announced on Wednesday that American forces carried out additional self-defense strikes against multiple targets in Iran, describing the attacks as a response to "Iran's unwarranted and continued aggression." The strikes follow a series of reciprocal attacks this week, including the downing of a U.S. helicopter on Tuesday that U.S. officials attributed to Iranian forces. In retaliation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted U.S. bases across the Middle East, and explosions were reported on Qeshm Island and in the cities of Bandar Abbas and Sirik.
President Donald Trump had earlier warned of further action, stating that the United States would hit Iran "hard" again. He also posted on his social platform that Iranian leaders had delayed negotiations. Iran’s foreign ministry condemned the U.S. actions as damaging to diplomatic efforts, while President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran would remain firm against any pressure.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said bombs would be dropped on key facilities in Iran, noting that Iran had been given an opportunity to reach a deal but had not taken it. The two countries had previously agreed to a cease-fire in April, intended to last two weeks, but intermittent exchanges of fire have continued since then.
