Veteran Graham Platner Wins Maine Democratic Senate Primary
Graham Platnan, a former Army serviceman and oyster farmer, secured the Democratic nomination for Maine's U.S. Senate seat, setting up a contest against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.
Graham Platnan, a United States Army veteran and oyster farmer, won the Maine Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, positioning him to face Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November election.
Platnan acknowledged voter concerns in his acceptance speech, pledging to earn "trust, faith and support" over the campaign and emphasizing issues such as the cost of living, housing affordability and health care. He also promised to defeat Collins, describing his own experience as evidence that people can change.
The race is viewed by Democrats as a key opportunity to flip a Republican-held seat and a potential factor in determining Senate control after the 2024 elections. Collins, who was unopposed in the Republican primary, highlighted her seniority and role as chair of the Committee on Appropriations, noting her work on rural hospitals, shipbuilding, infrastructure and broadband.
Platnan's campaign has faced scrutiny over past personal conduct, including reports of explicit messages, allegations of intimidation, and old online posts that were interpreted as endorsing political violence or containing homophobic slurs. He has disputed the claims, attributed some remarks to mental-health struggles after combat deployments, and covered a tattoo later identified as a Nazi symbol.
The Democratic primary also involved ranked-choice voting in other races, with outcomes pending in the gubernatorial contest and the 2nd Congressional District race.
