Trump family gains $2.3 billion from crypto ventures as investors lose similar amount
Reuters analysis shows the Trump family earned about $2.3 billion from Trump-related cryptocurrency sales, while roughly one million investors incurred comparable losses.
The Trump family has earned an estimated $2.3 billion from cryptocurrency projects linked to former President Donald Trump, according to a Reuters investigation. The same analysis found that investors in those projects lost a similar total amount by the end of April.
The bulk of the profit came from sales of the World Liberty Financial (WLFI) governance token, which the family’s venture World Liberty Financial created. Reuters reports the Trumps received a 75% share of token sales and hold a 60% ownership stake in the company. WLFI’s price fell from around $0.31 in August 2024 to about $0.05 at the time of reporting.
Additional earnings were derived from the $TRUMP memecoin, whose revenue details were not publicly disclosed. Reuters estimated investor losses by examining blockchain data, which includes retail buyers and indirect investors who purchased related financial products such as ETFs.
"World Liberty Financial said the token is not an investment product and does not validate third-party methodologies for valuing governance tokens or estimating aggregate investor positions," the report noted.
Justin Sun, founder of the Tron blockchain, sued World Liberty Financial in April, alleging illegal freezing of his tokens. World Liberty Financial responded by calling the lawsuit a smear campaign and filed a counter-defamation suit.
Reuters also highlighted that a small group of early large traders in the $TRUMP token realized significant profits, while the majority of participants were average retail investors.
