U.S. conducts strikes on Iranian targets after Apache helicopter shot down near Hormuz

Summary

The United States launched air strikes against Iranian air-defense and radar sites following the downing of an Apache helicopter, while Iran said it would retaliate and later hit sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.

The United States carried out a series of air strikes on Iranian air-defense, ground-control and surveillance radar installations near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday evening, officials said. The operation, which began at 5 p.m. and concluded around 9 p.m., was described by U.S. Central Command as a proportional response to what it called unjustified Iranian aggression.

President Donald Trump had earlier announced that the United States would have to respond after an Apache helicopter was shot down while patrolling the strait. He said the incident required a necessary response.

Iran’s foreign minister responded that the country’s armed forces would not leave any attack unanswered. In the hours that followed, Iran reported launching attacks on targets in Bahrain and Kuwait and said it had struck a Jordanian air base used by U.S. forces.

Both sides have continued diplomatic talks that have been ongoing since April, although no definitive agreement has been reached. Trump later said he believed the negotiations were progressing and that a peace deal could be concluded within days.
