Analysts and CEOs Weigh OpenAI's IPO Filing Amid Growing AI Competition

Wall Street and tech leaders comment on OpenAI's confidential S-1 filing, noting the competitive pressure from Anthropic and SpaceX and the financial challenges of scaling AI businesses.

OpenAI submitted a confidential S-1 filing on Monday, joining Anthropic and SpaceX in the emerging wave of AI-focused initial public offerings. The company has not set a definitive listing date, indicating that a public debut may still be some time away.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas told CNBC that his firm remains on track for a 2028 IPO and warned that the outcomes of OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s offerings could have "ripple effects" across the sector. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said the filing signals that "the floodgates for the IPO market are officially open" and noted that both OpenAI and Anthropic are racing to raise capital quickly to stay ahead of each other.

Portfolio manager Dan Niles expressed a more favorable view of Anthropic, citing its recent profitability and rapid revenue growth, while suggesting that Google dominates the consumer AI space. Verdict Capital founder Michael Fertik said SpaceX’s upcoming IPO could unlock significant liquidity and encourage other AI firms to go public, arguing that broader retail participation would help the United States maintain a lead in generative AI.

Decision Tree Research CEO Gregory Allen highlighted the trillion-dollar valuations being discussed for OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX, describing the potential cash flow as comparable to a $45 billion annual annuity, but cautioned that the companies must manage massive capital expenditures to avoid cash shortfalls.

AI researcher Gary Marcus warned that investors who purchase shares at current valuations may be "stragglers" lacking insight into the market dynamics. EMARKETER principal analyst Nate Elliott described OpenAI’s filing as occurring at a "precarious moment," noting that the firm is losing early advantages in both consumer and enterprise AI and may struggle to secure the capital needed for its cost structure after raising nearly $200 billion in private funding.

OpenAI’s chief futurist Joshua Achiam framed the competition as a philosophical choice between Anthropic’s vision of a "loving ensouled machine God" and OpenAI’s focus on empowering humanity, dismissing analyses that reduce the rivalry to a simple consumer-versus-enterprise dichotomy.
