New Renderings Reveal $8 Billion Penn Station Revamp with Expanded Public Space

Résumé

Officials unveiled designs for a major overhaul of New York’s Penn Station that would add a new Eighth Avenue entrance, increase circulation space by 165 % and begin construction in 2027.

New renderings of an $8 billion renovation of New York’s Penn Station were presented on Monday, outlining a new entrance on Eighth Avenue and the removal of the theater currently attached to Madison Square Garden. The redesign aims to replace cramped underground concourses with naturally lit, open areas, expanding commuter space from roughly 65,000 to 170,000 square feet.

Amtrak President Andy Byford, former head of New York City Transit, and architect Vishaan Chakrabarti described the plan as a step toward making the hub a "world-class" station. Byford acknowledged that construction, slated to start in 2027 and last about six years, will cause disruptions but emphasized that it will not lead to fare increases or surcharges.

The project’s organizers said discussions about naming rights have not taken place, despite comments from President Trump. The owners of Madison Square Garden will receive an undisclosed payment for the theater’s removal.
