Nithya Raman Moves Into Second Place in Los Angeles Mayoral Primary

Resumen

Progressive councilmember Nithya Raman has overtaken Spencer Pratt for second place in the Los Angeles mayoral primary, positioning her for a runoff against incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.

Nithya Raman, a Los Angeles City Council member, has risen to second place in the mayoral primary, surpassing reality-TV personality Spencer Pratt by roughly 3,000 votes, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s latest tally. Incumbent Mayor Karen Bass remains in first place with about 34.7% of the vote, while Raman holds 27.1% and Pratt has slipped to 26.7%.

The primary, which is nonpartisan, will send the top two vote-getters to a November runoff unless a candidate secures a majority. About 80% of ballots have been counted, a figure provided by the Associated Press, and the final results are still pending as mail-in votes continue to be processed.

Raman issued a statement saying the campaign is “encouraged by the latest vote count and remain grateful to the thousands of Angelenos who have powered this campaign.”

Spencer Pratt did not respond to a request for comment, though he later suggested on social media that votes from homeless individuals might have impacted Raman’s total, without offering evidence.

Alex Stack, a spokesperson for Mayor Bass, noted that the upcoming contest could focus on issues such as encampments near schools and law-enforcement staffing, while also mentioning concerns about Hollywood jobs and immigration enforcement.
