Six stabbed at New York Penn Station, suspect detained
Six people were stabbed near Penn Station Sunday evening; authorities say the suspect was quickly arrested and at least one victim suffered serious injuries.
Law enforcement responded to reports of six stabbing victims at New York's Penn Station around 7 p.m. on Sunday. The FDNY confirmed that at least one of the injured sustained serious wounds and the victims were transported to nearby hospitals. Amtrak Police recovered a knife at the scene and arrested a suspect shortly after the attack, according to an Amtrak statement.
Mayor Mamdani said the alleged perpetrator was taken into custody following a swift response by Amtrak Police and first responders, and expressed sympathy for the victims and their families. He added that Amtrak service was not affected and that his administration was cooperating with the railroad's investigation.
Video footage showed four Amtrak officers confronting the suspect, who was reportedly pepper-sprayed and tackled. A witness said additional officers were needed to restrain him. Police described the individual as emotionally disturbed and said there were no links to terrorism. A law-enforcement source described the incident as a random act of violence, and a senior NYPD official said it had "no terror nexus."
Police asked the public to avoid the area due to expected traffic delays, road closures and possible mass-transit disruptions.
