United States falls 2-1 to Germany in pre‑World Cup friendly
The US men’s national team lost 2-1 to Germany in Chicago, with Antonee Robinson scoring the equaliser before Germany regained the lead, and several players substituted ahead of the World Cup.
The United States men's national team was defeated 2-1 by Germany in a friendly at Soldier Field on Saturday, a match that serves as preparation for the upcoming World Cup. Germany opened the scoring in the third minute through Kai Havertz, who headed in a cross. The United States responded in the 37th minute when right back Antonee Robinson struck from outside the box to level the score.
Germany reclaimed the lead six minutes later when Leroy Sane finished a pass from Havertz. The United States made a number of substitutions in the second half, with coach Mauricio Pochettino bringing on players such as Sebastian Berhalter, Mark McKenzie, Gio Reyna and Auston Trusty. Antonee Robinson left the field with a possible hamstring issue, joining Tim Ream, Miles Robinson and Christian Pulisic among the injured.
Pochettino is expected to field a similar lineup against Paraguay in the United States' next warm‑up match before the tournament opener on June 12. Germany, ranked tenth by FIFA, will also use the game as a final tune‑up ahead of their World Cup campaign.
