Protests Erupt in Albania Over Kushner-Backed Resort Development

Summary

For over a week, protesters in Albania have demonstrated against a billion-dollar resort project linked to Jared Kushner, expressing concerns over environmental impacts and lack of transparency from the government.

Demonstrations in Albania against a luxury resort development tied to Jared Kushner have persisted for over a week, with activists branding the movement the "Flamingo Revolution" to highlight the wildlife that may be endangered by the project. The development aims to transform Sazan Island, formerly a communist military site off the Adriatic coast, into a high-end tourist destination, with additional plans for hotels in the surrounding Vjosa-Narta protected zone, known for its biodiversity, including flamingo habitats.

Public outrage intensified following the arrival of construction equipment last month, leading to viral footage of activists clashing with authorities. Critics argue that the Albanian government has failed to engage in public consultation regarding the project. "There was nobody who was informed. Just one day, we saw bulldozers entering, cutting trees, destroying the dunes," stated Aleksandr Trajce, the executive director of the Protection and Preservation of the Natural Environment in Albania.

Amidst ongoing protests, Prime Minister Edi Rama has reiterated his support for the project, framing it as a crucial economic opportunity for a country with one of Europe's lowest GDP per capita rates. He emphasized the need for Albania to be an attractive destination for investors, declaring, "There is absolutely no chance that the investment will stop as long as I am here."

Conversely, local environmental officers have reported adverse effects already incurred by the planning stages, including the loss of a sea turtle nest due to construction activities. While the development company expressed commitment to responsible practices and community enrichment, demonstrators continue to voice their concerns over preserving the environment, particularly in areas recognized by UNESCO for their ecological significance.
