Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Reopens Following Repainting

Water has begun to flow into the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after a lengthy closure due to a repainting effort led by President Trump. The pool was darkened to a shade described as "American flag blue," a change that has received mixed reviews from onlookers. Trump stated that the pool had previously been "just gray… the color of concrete and stone."

Onlookers noted the pool's gradual refilling but found it difficult to discern any significant color difference. Local resident Luisa Córdoba remarked, "The more water it fills, the more similar it looks [to before]," while Maryland resident Terry Barzanti humorously noted that the color seemed indistinguishable to him due to colorblindness. In contrast, others described the new color as being closer to black.

Concerns surrounding the project extend beyond aesthetics; the renovation, which Trump initially claimed would cost $2 million, is reported to lack transparency regarding funding sources and actual expenses, with estimates reaching $13.1 million. An Interior Department spokesperson indicated that various funding mechanisms, including revenue from park passes, were being utilized.

Controversially, the project was undertaken despite a lawsuit from the Cultural Landscape Foundation, which alleged federal review processes were bypassed. Trump claims the renovations will prevent future leaks and maintain the pool for 50 to 100 years.

In addition to this project, Trump aims to enhance various aspects of Washington, D.C., which includes restoring fountains and cleaning landmarks in anticipation of the city's 250th birthday celebrations. Local resident Maryellen Thornton expressed joy at the restoration of water features, stating that they bring happiness to the community. However, some visitors remain skeptical about the necessity of these changes, with one suggesting, "If it's not broken, don't fix it."
